Fantasy baseball in 2010 has a couple of surprises to start the season and a couple of early season busts that are making owners contemplate dropping them for available starters. Although this may be a good thing for some teams, it’s not always the best case of the long run. Baseball is a sport of failure, and it owners have to be patient with their teams. Knowing that players will have hot and cold streaks from time to time, it’s best not to put to much on early season starts and if your player is on these list it doesn’t indicate that the season may continue in the same fashion.
Fantasy baseball 2010 surprises:
- Vernon Wells – Career 280 hitter is currently well over 300 and popped 7 home-runs already. He is on pace for 63 if he keeps it up but I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t. However, for those that jumped on him early and have been playing, good for you because you are getting the best of him right now.
- Scott Podsednik – Not that he can’t hit and steal bases, but he is currently leading the AL in batting average and is in the top 5 for stolen bases. He is seeing the ball really well and his early start may be a signal of more to come, but he is also a career 280 hitter so don’t be surprised if he doesn’t drop off some.
- Matt Kemp - He is tearing it up with 7 home-runs to start the season and may be a sign of bigger things for him. This should be a solid year for him a he could be coming into his own so don’t be surprised if this continues, but he may be slightly off his current pace going forward.
- Matt Garza – Not only is leading the AL in wins, but is second in strikeouts. He is making a statement so far to start the season but if he can keep this pace up all year remains to be seen. However, seeing how he has been improving over the past two seasons it wouldn’t be that hard to think he can continue to put in good starts.
- Livan Hernandez – He is leading the NL with a 0.75 era and two wins on the season. He has good stuff and has shown it times in the past but not for a whole season. He has a career era over 4 and hasn’t had a winning season since 2008. He may be able to keep up a string of good starts, but will he lead the NL at the end of the season, I’d bet not.
Fantasy baseball 2010 busts:
- JD Drew – Not that many had high hopes but he shows flashes of brilliance that gives some people hope. However, this season he is hitting just above 100 and struck out 20 times to start the year. He is a veteran hitter than will eventually come around, but his age and injuries may be playing a part in this and there is a chance that it may not get better.
- David Ortiz – The bat is gone for sure. He is hitting just above 100 and has only one home-run on the season. He has only 3 rbi to date and doesn’t seem to be finding any groove at the plate. It doesn’t appear to be getting better for him and this may be the final appearances for the Big Poppi.
- Chone Figgins – Still able to show the speed and some plat discipline that made him an every day player, he has yet to get his bat going and produce consistently at the plate. When he does find his zone he should be able to get his average up and shake this early season slump. However, most owners are benching him at this point.
