Fantasy Football Week 8: 5 Breakout Players
Every week in sports there are some breakout players that step up to the challenge and make the leap from back-up to starter, even if it for just one week. These players can make your week if you know who they are and have the confidence to start them. For example, I played Coach last week in a fantasy league, he had a couple of byes and ended up bringing in little known player named Donnie Avery. Well Avery ended up having a great game with a TD and good receptions, and of course beat me by a couple of points. Picking up Avery from the wire at the time seemed a little risky, but proved to be the right play. Here are a couple of players that might be surprise hits for you team this week.
5 Breakout Fantasy Football Players:
1. Donnie Avery – I know he isn’t under the radar right now, but I was still able to add him in almost every league I was in so if he is still out there in your league, grab him. He is the #2 for the Rams, Bulger is starting to heat up, and Holt isn’t has able to get away from defenders as he used too. If you think his performance was a fluked last week, then now is the time to jump on him as most others are thinking the same thing. Look for Avery to get consistent look and catches, as well as end zone.
2. Ben-Jarvis Green-Ellis – Yes, this all one person, and despite if you can pronounce his name, this rookie is looking at a possible breakout game here. The big add this week was Kevin Faulk, but I went after the rookie who took over for Sammy Morris when he left the game with an injury. This rookie is looking to possibly start the game, or if not, get the bulk of the carries today so this could be a 20 plus carry week for him, and given the soft running he is up against, this could be a multi TD day as well.
3. Kolby Smith – This may or may not be a wake up to the Chiefs. Given LJ performance on and off the field this year, and Smith effectiveness running the ball, may be the perfect time for Smith to breakout and show that he should be the starter in KC. LJ’s one game suspension should open some eyes to this young talent and he filled in very well for LJ last year when he was out with an injury. Smith will see the bulk of the work, as well as end zone so this very well could be the breakout game Smith has been waiting for this year.
4. Nate Washington – This vet doesn’t get to see too many starts so if he does get one this week, with Holmes being injured, he should have a solid week. He has been emerging as one of Big Ben’s favorite targets, and with the increase in looks this week, he should be looking at some breakout numbers. He has a TD in each of the last two games, and so many defenders watching Ward these days, it might just leave an open Washington to run around the field and catch balls.
5. Kevin Curtis – This starter hasn’t played a game all year so look for this to be his first start as well as breakout game. He was one of McNabb’s top go to guys last year, and they were expecting him to make big impact this year, but a sports Hernia stopped him from making a splash early, but look for him to put up some good numbers for the rest of the season and it starts with today. If by chance he is still on the wire in your league, grab him now as he won’t be there after today.
Kurtis is a decoy, D.Jackson is the man, he’s earned himself starting playing time/looks/touches.
Thankfully so, I’ve got Desean in two of my leagues and think he is a very solid play. I was hoping that his looks wouldn’t go down with the return of Curtis and I’m glad to see that to be the case so far. Despite his rookie blunder of dropping the ball on the end zone costing me a win one week, I think he is still a great player. He should be a #1 WR for years to come, and thanks for the comment.
Can the 49er’s turn there team Cohesion around?
or the 49’ers looking to bring back Steve Marucciafter being fired when having a winning playoff record.
It’s not completely out of the question. Look what the Chargers did to Schottenheimer and that was after having a 14-2 record and making it to the title game. I think Mike has about 3 game to prove himself or he’ll be looking for a job as well. The Niners want to win now and so they are looking for the one that will turn it around and yesterday’s performance was no indication of that.
