David Wilson Gets A Fantasy Boost

This is yet another reason why preseason games both matter and don’t. They don’t matter in terms of what the regular season will hold, but they do matter in terms of how the players will fare in the draft.  I personally hope they do shorten the preseason and maybe add those games to the regular season.  It’s seems to go by so quick now that an extra two games that matter wouldn’t be so bad.  With yet another injury to a key player, the fantasy landscape confirms yet another solid RB1 for drafting and David Wilson will go in the first 3 rounds I for one really hate to draft too early for reasons like this. You just never know what’s going to happen and waiting till a couple of days before the regular season starts is a good idea.

With a broken leg to Andre Brown, David Wilson cements himself as the number 1 ball carrier for the Giants and should see plenty of work while Brown is out. The Giants still have backups Torain and Scott, but it’s Wilson who will be on the field the most and will likely get the bulk of the red zone carries.  With his speed and ability, he could get set himself to be the guy even when Brown returns, but that remains to be seen since Wilson had some ball handling issues last year that forced to the bench.  It took weeks to dig himself out of the dog house so I’m sure he’ll be thinking about this while he’s getting more attention.

Over the final 4 games last year, after Wilson managed to get himself back on the field, he racked up 3 touchdowns, had double digit carries in 3 out of the 4 games, and even saw his first 100 yard game of his career. This left many believing he has found his way and was going to become the guy in 2013.  However, with Brown sitting comfortably behind him, many thought Brown would split carries with Wilson and even see the bulk of the goal-line work, which lowered Wilson’s value.  Now with Brown now out for several weeks at least, Wilson’s value much higher as he will see the bulk of the carries, plus the goal-line work unless he does something to screw it up like fumble the ball.

From what I’ve seen and read about these guys, Wilson is the one that the Giants want to give the ball too, but they need a security blanket just in case and Brown is that guy.  I think as long as Wilson makes the most of this opportunity, he should continue to see the workload and goal-line even after Brown comes back.  Wilson’s ability and the team he is one, could make him a 1000 yard carrier this year and put him easily into the top 10.  I’d feel comfortable taking Wilson in the late second or early third round for sure.  I don’t know if I would take him in the first yet, but it’s late first and the other solid backs are gone, then you might want to take a chance on Wilson.
